Project CARS is a realistic racing simulation franchise known for its physics engine, dynamic weather, and diverse motorsport disciplines. The series began with the 2015 release of Project CARS, which was distributed in various versions including a Limited Edition, PlayStation Hits, and a Game of the Year edition. It was designed with community involvement and professional driver feedback to offer an authentic driving experience.
Slightly Mad Studios developed the debut installment,
Project CARS (2015), utilizing their proprietary Madness Engine. Funding and playtesting were facilitated through the World of Mass Development portal, allowing players to contribute directly to development. Upon release, the base game was accompanied by
Project CARS [Limited Edition] (2015), which packaged additional car models and a custom steelbook. To sustain the title's lifecycle, the developer released
Project CARS [Game of the Year] (2015), bundling all downloadable content, including extra tracks like the Nürburgring combined circuit and dozens of additional vehicles. The game's commercial success on consoles led to its inclusion in Sony's budget range as
Project CARS [Playstation Hits] (2015).
The franchise expanded with sequels in 2017 and 2020, shifting from strict simulation toward accessible arcade racing. Codemasters acquired Slightly Mad Studios in 2019, and Electronic Arts subsequently absorbed the IP in 2021. In November 2022, Electronic Arts announced the formal cessation of the franchise, citing a lack of growth potential, and subsequently delisted the original 2015 titles from digital storefronts due to expiring car and track licensing agreements.
