About

Taikou Risshiden is a series of Japanese tactical role-playing simulation games created by Koei. Beginning with the original Taikou Risshiden in 1993, the series allows players to experience the Sengoku period through the rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and other historical figures. Subsequent entries, including Taikou Risshiden II, III, and V, expanded the gameplay by introducing multiple playable characters, diverse career paths, and card-based battle systems.
The franchise originated on Japanese PC platforms, with the debut of Taikou Risshiden (1993) on the PC-9801 before expanding to home consoles. Koei refined this hybrid formula of personal development and grand strategy in Taikou Risshiden II (1995), which received enhanced ports in 1996 for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. These early entries established a gameplay loop centered on lord-vassal relationships, fief management, and skill acquisition through specialized mini-games.
With Taikou Risshiden III (1999), the developers experimented with a companion system, though it restricted some of the open-ended freedom of its predecessors. This was corrected in Taikou Risshiden V (2004), widely considered the pinnacle of the series. The 2004 release introduced non-samurai professions, allowing players to live as merchants, doctors, ninjas, or pirates. This entry's enduring popularity led to a feature-rich PlayStation Portable port, Taikou Risshiden V (2009), which added new scenarios, items, and character cards. The series remains a distinct branch of historical simulations, celebrated for its intimate, individual-focused perspective on feudal advancement.
