Tales of Xillia is a sub-series within Bandai Namco's Tales role-playing franchise, debuting in Japan in 2011 and internationally in 2013. The series consists of the original Tales of Xillia and its direct sequel, Tales of Xillia 2, released in 2012. These games are known for their Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System and their setting in the worlds of Rieze Maxia and Elympios.
Development of the project began as a 15th-anniversary celebration for the broader franchise, featuring character designs from both Kosuke Fujishima and Mutsumi Inomata. The Japanese launch of
Tales of Xillia (2011) was accompanied by high-profile merchandising, including the
Tales Of Xillia [Lalabit Market Limited Edition] (2011), which bundled exclusive figurines, and the
Tales Of Xillia Limited Edition Console (2011), a custom-designed PlayStation 3 hardware bundle. Promotional efforts also distributed the rare
Tales of Xillia [Promo Not For Resale] (2011) discs to retailers.
Following this commercial success, the narrative expanded with
Tales of Xillia 2 (2012), which introduced a silent protagonist and a choice-based gameplay mechanic. This sequel later received a budget re-release in Japan under the title
Tales Of Xillia 2 [the Best] (2012). Localization efforts brought the duology to Western audiences, starting with the English localization of
Tales of Xillia (2013) and its physical collector's package,
Tales of Xillia [Limited Edition] (2013). These releases solidified the duology's legacy as a pivotal era for the franchise's transition into fully 3D environments and real-time action combat.
