About

Tantei Jinguuji Saburou is a classic mystery adventure series created by Data East. The franchise follows detective Saburou Jinguuji solving various cases, spanning early titles like Yokohamakou Renzokusatsujinjiken (1988), Kiken na Futari (1989), and Toki no Sugiyuku Mama ni (1990). Later entries like Mikan no Rupo (1996), Yume no Owarini (1998), Tomoshibi ga Kienu Ma ni (1999), Innocent Black (2002), and Kind of Blue (2004) transitioned the series across platforms from the Famicom to the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

Characterized by a hardboiled noir atmosphere, the gameplay relies on a menu-driven command system where players interview suspects, examine crime scenes, and utilize a signature option to smoke a cigarette to organize clues. Recurring characters like assistant Yoko Ono and Tokyo Metropolitan Police inspector Shinsuke Kumano define the narrative dynamic.

Following the initial Famicom releases, Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Yokohamakou Renzokusatsujinjiken shifted the setting to Yokohama, while Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Kiken na Futari [Kouhen] delivered its narrative across a two-part floppy disk format. The final 8-bit entry, Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Toki no Sugiyuku Mama ni, tackled darker themes involving art theft and narcotics.

The transition to CD-ROM technology began with Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Mikan no Rupo, introducing redbook audio and detailed hand-drawn character portraits. This aesthetic peaked with Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Yume no Owarini, celebrated for its multi-perspective storytelling, and Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Tomoshibi ga Kienu Ma ni. Following Data East's financial decline, development moved to WorkJam, which modernized the franchise with 3D environments and voice acting in Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Innocent Black and Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Kind of Blue. The intellectual property was later acquired by Arc System Works, ensuring the legacy of the long-running mystery brand.
