The series consists of the strategy-adventure games This Is the Police (2016/2017) and its sequel This Is the Police II (2018). Players manage a police department, make difficult moral choices, and in the sequel, engage in tactical turn-based combat.
Developed by Belarusian indie developer Weappy Studio and published by THQ Nordic, the franchise centers on the gritty, noir-infused story of Jack Boyd, a police chief voiced by Jon St. John.
The debut title,
This Is the Police, takes place in the decaying city of Freeburg, where Boyd is forced into early retirement by a corrupt mayor and seeks to amass $500,000 in his final 180 days. Players navigate municipal politics, labor disputes, and mafia demands while dispatching officers to various emergencies.
The narrative continues in
This Is the Police II, which shifts the setting to the cold, hostile border town of Sharpwood. Here, Boyd operates under an alias alongside the town's new, inexperienced sheriff, Lilly Reed. This entry expanded the gameplay by introducing individual officer statistics, equipment customization, and grid-based tactical missions.
The series' distinct visual style relies on minimalist, low-poly aesthetics and animated comic-book cutscenes. Its success led to the 2019 spin-off Rebel Cops, which isolated the tactical combat mechanics of the second game into a standalone stealth-focused experience.
