About

Originally released for MS-DOS in 1992, Wolfenstein 3D popularized the first-person shooter genre and was subsequently ported to various platforms. These releases include versions for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Atari Jaguar in 1994, the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer in 1995, and the Game Boy Advance in 2002. The game follows Allied spy William "B.J." Blazkowicz as he attempts to escape from the Nazi stronghold Castle Wolfenstein.
The 1994 Super Nintendo port of Wolfenstein 3D, developed directly by id Software, faced heavy censorship, which replaced blood with sweat, removed Nazi iconography, and turned attack dogs into giant mutant rats. Conversely, the 1994 Atari Jaguar version featured high-resolution sprites and redrawn weapons, serving as the graphical basis for subsequent releases. The 1994 Macintosh and PC-98 ports also offered high-resolution displays.
The 1995 3DO Interactive Multiplayer version utilized this enhanced audiovisual presentation, incorporating a rearranged, orchestrated soundtrack and digitized sound effects. In 2002, the Game Boy Advance version offered a portable rendition that reverted to the original MS-DOS map layouts but omitted the music during gameplay due to hardware limitations. That same year, the game was included as an unlockable bonus in Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the Xbox. These mid-to-late 1990s and early 2000s iterations demonstrated the technical evolution of console hardware, adapting the seminal raycasted engine to diverse architectures and varying regional censorship standards.
