John Blacksad, a New York black cat private investigator, is back in action. With his trusty sidekick Jake Ostiombe by his side, they take on their next case: the mysterious death of Joe Dunn, a boxing gym owner. But as Blacksad delves deeper into the world of corruption and deceit, he realizes that nothing is as it seems.
The game's third-person perspective follows Blacksad as he navigates through a cinematic experience, with an action camera that occasionally limits player view. Players can move the camera slightly to find hidden items, such as sports album stickers, which are scattered throughout the main menu. The stickers feature famous athletes and celebrities, and some require players to explore other areas before finding them.
Interactions with objects are limited, but players can select specific icons when facing multiple options. Conversations often come with time limits, resulting in default responses if no action is taken. Blacksad's actions and dialogue choices affect his stats, which can be viewed at any time. There are eight stats to track, each with its opposite, and percentage bars indicating the player's leaning.
Blacksad doesn't have an inventory system, but he always carries essential items like lockpicks. His notebook is used for recording information, which can be paired with other knowledge to uncover new clues. The game offers a unique blend of investigation and deduction, where players must piece together evidence to solve the case.
Blacksad: Under the Skin offers an original story that complements the comic book series, rather than adapting an existing game. Players will have to rely on their wits and observation skills to uncover the truth behind Joe Dunn's death.
