John Blacksad, a New York black cat P.I. in early years after the World War II, finds himself entangled in a web of conspiracies when a client, Sonia, approaches him with a sad expression on her face. Her father, Joe Dunn, an owner of a boxing gym, has been found dead under mysterious circumstances. The police suspects a suicide, but Blacksad isn't convinced and decides to investigate further.
The game follows Blacksad in third-person perspective, with an action-camera that provides a cinematic feel. However, the camera's fixed position limits the player's ability to look where they want, forcing them to explore only what the camera shows. The player can slightly move the camera offset from its position to find hidden album stickers, which are scattered throughout the game.
Interactions with objects in the environment are often limited to select an item or a reaction during dialogues, which can affect Blacksad's character stats and have serious consequences. Most dialogues are time-based, resulting in default answers if the player fails to react before time runs out. The player's actions and dialogue choices can be checked at any time during gameplay.
There is no inventory system in Blacksad: Under the Skin , as items Blacksad carries are always with him and used automatically at the right location. His notebook serves as a tool for recording information about suspects and other people of interest, which can be contemplated upon during gameplay to reveal new pieces of information.
Blacksad: Under the Skin offers an official and new story that stands alone from existing games in the series.
