Battle of Olympus is an action game with light role-playing elements set in ancient Greece. You play as Orpheus, whose girlfriend Helene has been kidnapped by the demonic ruler Hades. To rescue her, you must seek the help of the powerful gods.

The gameplay is similar to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link with its presentation and side-scrolling combat style. However, it lacks player-dependent character-building like a full-fledged RPG. The game world consists of interconnected, maze-like sections that include towns and hostile areas where you fight your way through Hades' minions.

The game references specific Greek myths, but also interprets them in a liberal way. Orpheus is not just a musician, but a warrior, and his beloved one is Helene, not Eurydice. The monsters in the game are based on Greek mythology, including cyclopes, minotaurs, pegasuses, and others.
