Batman: Vengeance for the GameBoy Advance is set in Gotham City, where the Joker's latest plan threatens the city's safety. Batman must team up with his allies Robin and Batgirl to take down the supervillains Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy, who seek to fill the power vacuum left by the Joker's apparent demise.
The game follows a similar narrative path as its console counterparts, drawing inspiration from the 1990s Batman animated TV series. The story unfolds through pre-rendered cutscenes using stills from the earlier versions of the game.
Gameplay in Batman: Vengeance is diverse and varied, with four distinct types of levels to navigate. In the side-scrolling sections, players control Batman as he runs and jumps left to right, taking down henchmen with kicks and punches, using gadgets like batarangs and smoke bombs to aid him.
The Batmobile stages present a unique challenge, where players must steer the vehicle through the road from a top-down perspective, avoiding traffic, obstacles, and enemies while reaching a goal within a time limit. The Batmobile is equipped with a gun that can clear a path, but its speed and agility are crucial to success.
Robin and Batgirl take center stage in the Batplane stages, which resemble traditional side-scrolling shoot'em'ups. Players must guide the plane through an automatically scrolling landscape, avoiding hazards and enemies while collecting guns and energy shields to aid them in their quest.
In the Puzzle stages, players control Robin as he navigates a labyrinth of rooms, moving crates to unlock paths, finding passwords and key cards to access new areas, and battling enemies along the way. The use of a remote-controlled robot called the Batcrawler provides an additional layer of strategy.
Completing Story Mode unlocks Advance Mode, where players must collect data disks within time limits in the side-scrolling, Puzzle, and Batmobile levels. In the Batplane stages, players must destroy the Joker's Pyro toys before a timer runs out.
