The Game Boy Advance adaptation of Midnight Club: Street Racing takes the core concept of underground street racing and simplifies it into an overhead 2D experience. The game's main Career Mode puts the player in a taxi on the streets of New York City, with the goal of entering the street racing scene and becoming the best.
The gameplay revolves around challenging other racers to enter the racing scene, with the ultimate aim of collecting as many cars as possible. There are 42 cars in the game, each with its own unique stats, such as top speed, acceleration, handling, durability, and nitros. Most cars can be unlocked by winning races, while others are obtained through more subtle means.
There are two types of racing: waypoint races, where players follow a "hook man" around the city to reach specific waypoints; and head-to-head races, triggered by calling an opponent on their cell phone to challenge them to a one-on-one. Progress in Career Mode is saved via passwords awarded after winning races.
Additional modes include Arcade, which allows players to replay unlocked content, Joyride, where the cities can be explored freely with adjustable traffic, and reliving all Career waypoint and head-to-head races.
