Wastelands is set in a dystopian future where two fighters, armed with laser swords, engage in one-on-one combat. The story revolves around the struggle for survival in a desolate wasteland, where only the strongest will survive. The gameplay involves pressing directional buttons along with the fire button to perform various moves, such as jumps, front rolls, kicks, and sword attacks. Scoring points is achieved by hitting your opponent, with the difficulty of scoring varying depending on the move performed. A simple foot sweep is worth half a point, while a jumped sword attack might be awarded with one and a half points. The first fighter to score six points wins the round.
The game features a single-player tournament with an adjustable difficulty level, allowing players to test their skills against increasingly tough opponents. Additionally, Wastelands includes a two-player mode, enabling head-to-head competition between friends or family members.
