WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 is the latest edition in the Smackdown vs. Raw series, introducing new features to the WWE game franchise. This is the first in the series to include wrestlers from ECW, such as The Sandman, Marcus Cor Von and CM Punk.

The game also includes a new struggle submission system, different weapon choices like guitars, and various superstar fighting styles, including Showman, Powerhouse, High-Flyer, and more. Each player can choose a primary and secondary fighting style. The game continues the legend trend with new arenas like Wrestlemania 23, Unforgiven, and Summerslam, as well as classic superstars such as Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, and Ric Flair. The roster varies depending on the platform, with some versions including wrestlers not available in others.

The season and general manager modes from previous games have been merged into the WWE 24/7 mode (PlayStation), allowing players to create a new superstar, play as an existing one, or manage someone. In the Wii version, this is called Main Event mode, which does not allow player management of wrestlers.

The game features various match types, including Iron Man, Battle Royal, Hell in a Cell, Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match, Hardcore, Ladder, Elimination Chamber, and Royal Rumble. The Wii version offers fewer match types: Single (One on One), Tag Team (Two on Two), K.O. Match, Triple Threat, and Hardcore.

Players can use custom music during entrances on the Xbox 360 versions, while the PS3 version offers a first-person view during those sequences. Both versions offer online multiplayer.
