Battlefield 4 is a military first-person shooter set in the near future and continues directly from Battlefield 3 . The focus is on its multiplayer mode, where players take on roles such as assault, recon, support, or engineers. Each class has special abilities and gadgets that can be unlocked over time. Players compete in team-based variants like conquest and rush modes, facing each other on large maps with various vehicles to use.
The most significant change is the interactive "Levolution" elements, which destroyable areas emphasize. The Frostbite engine's unique selling point: each map has one level element that changes the level when destroyed. Battlefield 4 also brings back naval warfare and commander mode. The commander is an additional player who sees the level from an overhead map, gives orders to team members, and can assign missile strikes.
New playing modes include Defuse (both teams must detonate a bomb in a target zone) and Obliteration (there's only one bomb pack on the map which must be used to detonate three points). The game features a single-player campaign, where a Chinese general starts a war with the world (allied with Russia), and the USA must save the day. The player takes on the role of Recker, surviving several missions with linear levels, enemy encounters, and vehicles.
Battlefield 4 features smaller multiplayer maps on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, limiting players to 24 instead of 64 at a time.
