Battlefield 4 is a military first-person shooter set in the near future, continuing directly from Battlefield 3 . The focus is on its multiplayer mode, where players take roles such as assault, recon, support, or engineers, each with special abilities and gadgets that can be unlocked over time. In team-based playing variants like conquest and rush modes, players face each other on big maps with various vehicles to use.
The most significant change are the interactive "Levolution" elements which emphasize destroyable areas, a unique selling point of the Frostbite engine. Battlefield 4 also brings back naval warfare and commander mode, where an additional player sees the level from an overhead map, gives orders to team members, and can assign missile strikes.
The game features a singleplayer campaign where a Chinese general starts a war with the world (allied with Russia) and the USA has to save the day. The player takes on the role of Recker, a faceless soldier who must survive several missions, typically in linear levels with a lot of action and enemies to shoot.
Like Battlefield 3 , Battlefield 4 has a singleplayer campaign. The game features a variety of gameplay modes including Defuse (both teams have to detonate a bomb) and Obliteration (spawn only one bomb pack, which must be used to detonate three points).
The game was released on November 12, 2013, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions have smaller multiplayer maps due to lower player limits.
