Final Lap by Namco is considered a spiritual successor to Pole Position, a Formula 1racing game featuring a single track. The Suzuka Circuit in Japan is recreated in this game, which was added to the Formula 1 calendar. Final Lap's claim to fame is its ability to link up to eight cabinets for a massive race.
The NES version has different features and mechanics. It has a one or two-player mode where players can compete on split-screen, with an option for tournaments where up to eight players take turns playing. The game takes place on tracks in New York, Mexico, Monaco, and other locations around the world. Before each race, players can upgrade their car by spending points to customize the tires, engine, brakes, or nitro. Pressing up on the control pad activates nitro, which can be used to boost speed.
