Detective Jack Walters arrives in Innsmouth to investigate a missing person case, only to uncover sinister mysteries that have haunted humanity for centuries. He soon discovers that his own past is linked to the dark events unfolding before him, and the ghosts of his mental hospital incarceration start to haunt him. Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is a first-person action-adventure survival horror game set in the H.P. Lovecraft mythos, based on his short story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". This game combines elements of adventure, stealth, and first-person shooter gameplay. The gameplay starts off as an exploration-based adventure, but soon becomes more challenging with the introduction of stealth and combat mechanics. One notable aspect is that the game does not feature a traditional HUD, with health being indicated through visual cues only. Ammo management also requires careful consideration before reloading.
The game's unique health system focuses on specific body parts rather than traditional hit points. Jack can pick up medikits to treat various types of wounds, each requiring different items to heal. Medicines like bandages, splints, sutures, and antidotes are used to stabilize his condition, while morphine provides temporary relief from severe effects.
Jack's sanity also plays a crucial role in the game. Exposure to disturbing content can cause vision blurring, hearing voices, and even drive him to madness or suicide. Additionally, Jack suffers from acrophobia, making high places unbearable for him.
