Silent Hill: Downpour is a survival horror game set in the town and its surroundings, just like its predecessors. The protagonist is Murphy Pendleton, a convicted felon who has been locked up for many years after stealing a police cruiser. After a riot at his prison, he is transferred to another facility during a transport near Silent Hill. When Murphy regains consciousness, he escapes from his captors and searches for a way out through the surroundings. As he explores, he meets people from the area, fellow escaped prisoners, and members of prison security, but soon encounters strange entities and occurrences that blur the line between dreams and reality.
In Downpour , players explore abandoned surroundings, talk to characters, solve puzzles, and experience a slow, psychological horror theme. The game combines these elements with combat, which is different from previous Silent Hill games like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories . Murphy must fight off monsters using one melee and one ranged weapon, which deteriorate over time. Without a visible health system, Murphy's condition is indicated by bloody clothes and limping. The player's decisions at key moments define the moral compass, leading to different endings. There are also optional sidequests that can be completed.
Downpour introduces an entirely new feature - a weather system. The game features a full day and night cycle, with rain often warning the player of danger. It is possible to hide until the weather improves again. Most of the game takes place in the natural surroundings of Silent Hill, including mountains, woods, streams, and locations in the city. The game also includes the series' famous Otherworld transformation when the town's evil influence distorts the environment.
