Eike Kusch walks through the quiet German town Lebensbaum. Suddenly, a tremendous blow darkens his sight, and he finds himself in a strange room filled with bizarre objects. A mysterious being named Homunculus tells Eike that he has been stabbed to death. Homunculus gives Eike a time-travelling device and brings him back to life before his murder took place. From then on, Eike's second chance turns into a constant race against time, as he tries to escape his destiny.
Shadow of Destiny is an action & adventure game for the PSP console. Eike has no health bar and no action elements in the game. Each chapter has a time limit, during which Eike must find a way to prevent the murderer from killing him. He can travel through time to different hours, days, years, and even centuries to achieve this goal. By obtaining crucial items, having conversations with specific characters, or performing actions in the past, Eike can prevent his murder.
Time-traveling requires energy units, which can be found by exploring the town. If Eike fails to achieve his goal within the allotted time, he must restart the chapter. During the game, players will have several choices and opportunities to change the future in various ways. The storyline branches and eventually results in eight different endings, six of which can be achieved during the first playthrough, and two others unlocked after completing the other six.
