The plot of Lord of the Rings: War in the North takes place within the time frame of the events experienced in J. R. R. Tolkien's books as well as the series of films from Peter Jackson. While the adventure in this game intertwines with that of Frodo and the Fellowship, it primarily takes place in other areas of the Middle Earth map. The player's character and two companions serve to support Frodo's grand quest by battling Sauron's "General" and his minions in the north.
The three playable characters available are Eradan, Andriel, and Farin. One of these predefined characters is selected at the start of the game, but tweaking the look can be done within the game using mirrors. Switching to one character can also be done by clicking on a mirror or continuing with the same character.
The gameplay is linear, with clear goals and quests that must be completed. The game is segmented into areas accessed through the map screen, each with central hubs for rest, trade, shopping, and acquiring new quests.
The gameplay largely revolves around fighting creatures. Melee and range fighting are handled with standard hits and special moves, as well as blocking and dodging. Characters can be upgraded with new abilities, and conversations with options are available, although they have no moral consequences.
