Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is the first title in The Legend of Heroes series' Trails of Cold Steel subseries. It follows the adventures of Rean and his friends as they attend a prestigious military academy and travel across the continent, uncovering secrets and facing challenges along the way.
The game features a turn-based battle system where you move characters around to unleash skills (known as Arts and Crafts) that can affect multiple enemies. This is similar to the battle system in Chrono Trigger, but with some unique twists.
Character progression is an interesting aspect of the game, as you equip various orbs to enhance stats, learn new skills, and acquire bonuses. While it's not as complex or exploitable as the Materia system in Final Fantasy VII, it still offers a good amount of depth and customization options.
Exploring locations allows you to take on enemies before battles, gain an advantage, uncover treasure chests, and speak with unique characters. You'll also have the opportunity to complete side-quests and check them off your list as you progress through the game.
