Putty Squad is a remake of the 1994 SNES game Putty Squad. It has more modern graphics and sound, but still closely resembles the original game in overall design. The player controls the blue character Putty through different levels where he has to free red characters that have been taken prisoner by invading forces. The game is played as a side-scrolling platformer with a slower pace and focus on exploration and puzzle elements.
As an amorphous blob, Putty has a number of abilities. He can stretch in the four major directions to reach items or move up platforms. He can also jump and flatten himself completely to avoid enemies. He has different types of attacks that can be upgraded throughout the game, ranging from a simple punch to electrical shocks and darts.
Putty can absorb certain items, which are stored in a bar on the right side of the screen where they can be selected at a later date. These items include launching rockets, throwing bombs, activating a shield, or calling in a pod for free movement. He is also able to inflate and use an air stream to scale heights, but only for a limited amount of time.
He has a limited amount of lives and hearts per life. Players can collect all yellow stars in a level to unlock additional rewards. Each level has a time limit, which can be extended by freeing prisoners and collecting clock items. A map mode is available where the game zooms out to show the entire level. The main game mode is called marathon, with separate challenge modes for speedruns and other challenges.
The PS4 version preordered game includes all levels from the original Putty game.
