MyCareer is called Livin' Da Dream and features a story-oriented mode with cinematic elements. Players control a young basketball player from Harlem, Frequency Vibrations ("Freq") , who starts out in a small high school team but moves to college teams and eventually the NBA.
The MyGM mode allows players to become the general manager of a team, giving them access to all aspects of the game. This includes signing and trading players, negotiating contracts, interacting with the team owner, media, building facilities, and other managerial tasks. New features include moving teams to new cities, summer leagues, three-team trades, and customizing arenas and jerseys.
The MyLeague mode is similar to MyGM but removes certain restrictions for more flexibility and customization options. The MyTeam mode involves building a team by collecting trading cards, unlocking players, playbooks, and other items. Cards come in packs with a random selection of items and have different levels indicating their quality.
Players can access all game modes on the Xbox One console.
