Double Dragon is set in a post-apocalyptic New York, where twin brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee train in the fighting style of Sou-Setsu-Ken. They run a small martial arts training school, teaching self-defense to their students. When Billy's girlfriend, Marian, is kidnapped by the "Black Warriors", a savage street gang led by Willy, the Lee brothers set out on a rescue mission.
The gameplay involves using various techniques such as punches and kicks, and even weapon attacks, to pursue the Black Warriors through different environments like city slums, industrial areas, and forests. The goal is to reach their hideout and confront the leader, Willy.
On the NES version, there's an additional VS. fighting mode for one or two players, where players can choose from six characters - Billy and five enemy characters - and engage in a one-on-one fight until one player's health bar is depleted. The last player standing wins.
