In a world threatened by a poisonous vapor, humans use crystals to protect themselves. These crystals need to be refilled with purifying Mana Water every year, or their energy will dwindle. Villages send four youths each year to retrieve the Mana Water from dungeons and caves.
The game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles takes inspiration from the early days of the series, but with a new gameplay style inspired by action RPGs like Zelda. Players choose one of four character classes: Yulks for magic, Selkies for stealth, Clavattes for their gentle nature, and Lilties for their cuteness.
The game can be played solo or with up to four players connected through the GBA-GC link. Each character has armor and a weapon that can be swapped out by crafting new ones using items in towns. Players can collect artifacts found throughout monster-filled areas to boost their stats, which can then be kept permanently once an area is completed.
In multiplayer mode, secret objectives are given to players, who must complete them to gain priority on artifacts at the end of the area. Spells can also be collected, but they cannot be taken out of combat areas. When combined in quick select or multiplayer battles, spells can merge to create more powerful ones.
