Wipeout is set in the year 2097, around four decades after its predecessor. Instead of the F3600 anti-gravity racing competition, the game features an even faster and more dangerous tournament: the F5000 AG league. The gameplay system is similar to that of the previous game: players race against each other or computer in high-speed futuristic environments, liberally picking up weapons scattered around the stages and using them against the opponents to finish the race in the highest position.
Each vehicle is provided with a shield; once this shield is breached (by weapons or other kinds of damage), the craft explodes. As in the first game, the vehicles move at very high speeds. The game's four difficulty levels are used to crank the speed up and down, with the highest setting corresponding to the highest speed. In addition to the main championship mode, there are also challenge modes, winning which rewards the player with faster game settings, new tracks, and new vehicles.
The Playstation version of Wipeout was released on 22 March 1996. The game belongs to the Racing genre and is known for its high-speed racing and futuristic environments. With its challenging gameplay and rewards system, Wipeout offers an exciting experience for players.

Story
Introduction
It's 2052 AD. Anti-gravity racing has become the world's biggest sport. The F3600 Race League is where it's at.
Tracks stretch across terrain in every corner of the world. Research goes on day and night in the quest to find the perfect race craft, the one that will travel further and faster than anything made before.
It's big business... and you're on the start grid for the next race. Pick the team you want to race for, take control of your souped-up anti-gravity racer, then ride the six huge circuits leaving the rest to chew fog.
The world's finest pilots are lining up to race for the biggest prize in sport. Will you reach the end? Get ready for wipEout. Ballistic racing.
Anti-Gravity Technology: A Timeline

May 4th, 2018: Dr. Fraser of the World Technology Symposium states, "It is clear that many sightings of UFO's are not hoaxes of any kind. We know this because many of the flying objects are in fact anti-gravity machines developed to enhance weaponry capabilities. In deciding to declare the existence of this technology, we are hoping that we can open it up to development by scientists with peaceful intent." - Michelle da Silva, science commentator, 'The Times'.

November 25th, 2024: Tessa Deakin of The Future Transport Campaign, 'New Transport Monthly', criticizes government bodies, particularly the World Technology Symposium, for denouncing anti-gravity technology for mass transport systems as inefficient and not "cost effective." She suspects this is due to increased tax on current fuel supplies.

November 26th, 2024: Secret memo from Chuck Hoffman (AG Team Leader in US) to Pierre Belmondo (Director of European AG Research): "Suggest we reject Symposium proposals. Sufficient interest exists in US team to continue research. Circulate memo world-wide."

February 2nd, 2038: Tessa Deakin of The Future Transport Campaign, 'New Transport Monthly', celebrates the downfall of the World Technology Symposium and the government they answered to. She notes that scientists who resisted political pressure have become key players in developing anti-gravity transport.

June 8th, 2044: 'Biz Newz', 'Race Dayz' (US journal) exclaims about new anti-gravity vehicles: "Wow! Bunch of us went out in the new anti-gravity vehicles last month! Speedy Gonzalez! You want the race of the future? You goddam got it with these bean machines. Be assured motor racing is DEAD! You can ride 'em to work or you can ride 'em into the ground... just make sure you're riding one somewhere!"

June 2050: Dirk Breakwater, Chief Executive of the F3600 Race League Commission, states in the official programme of the first F3600 Championships: "And to the world watching this event, already bigger than soccer's World Cup or the Olympic Games, I say, 'See you again next year!' Race on!"
How to Play
Starting the Game
•
Set up your Sony PlayStation in accordance with the instruction manual supplied with the system.
•
Follow your system directions to open the CD drive and place the CD onto the bed of the drive, ensuring the printed side faces upwards.
•
Close the CD drive and press the Power button to begin play.
Option Menus
Before you can take your place on the track, you need to make a few choices about the game you are about to play. Wipeout will offer you a number of menus before you play the game.
•
Use the UP and DOWN arrows on the joypad to highlight your choice, then press the X button to select it.
•
To go back through the menus, press the button.
1-2 Players/Options Selection
Choose the one or two player game with this menu. See the section headed 'Wipeout with 2 players' for more information on the two player game. You are also offered the chance to go to the Options menu.

Load and Save
Using Sony PlayStation memory cards, you can store some of WipeOut's variable features.
•
If you select 'Save', you will then need to select 'New File' before choosing a file name of 6 letters.
•
Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrows on the joypad to cycle through the alphabet and press X to select each letter.
•
When 6 letters are selected, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrows to highlight the word 'End' then select it using the X button.
•
To load information from a memory card, select 'Load' and choose from the list of files provided using the UP and DOWN arrows. Press X to select, and the file will be loaded.

Joypad Configuration
When you play Wipeout, the joypad controls will be default settings. However, if you are more comfortable using a different arrangement, you can select another configuration.
•
Use LEFT and RIGHT arrows to cycle through the pre-set configurations and press X to select the one you want.
•
Remember that all instructions in this manual refer to the default settings.
•
It is fully compatible with Namco's NeGcon and will be automatically detected when you plug the NeGcon into joypad port number 1.
•
If you have a NeGcon, you may choose from four different button configurations. There are a selection of 4 button presets to choose from: the buttons determine thrust, deploy weapon, and airbrakes.
•
You may also select the 'NeGcon twist' values in the joypad configuration screen. Once selected, adjust the NeGcon to the angle you feel comfortable with for maximum lock and press the 'I' button.
Audio Configuration
•
Use the UP and DOWN arrows to choose one of two variable options.
•
You can choose SFX/Music which allows you to alter the balance between sound effects and music. Use LEFT and RIGHT arrows.
•
Select CD allows you to choose a particular music track or a selection using the LEFT and RIGHT arrows.
Times
•
Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrows to cycle through the high scores on all successfully completed tracks.
Racing Class Selection
There are two racing classes in Wipeout: Venom and Rapier.
•
When you first play the game, you will be in the Venom class.
•
You will only be able to move up to the faster Rapier class when you have completed all six Venom tracks and finished top of the points table.
Championship/Single Race/Time Trial Selection
•
Use the up and down arrow buttons to highlight your chosen race type and press button X to select it.
Championship
Starting on the first track, you will attempt to finish in the top three to qualify for the next one. Points will also be awarded dependent on your placing.
•
If you finish outside the top three, you will lose a life. You have 3 lives per track.
•
If you manage to complete all six tracks in the Venom class AND finish top of the points table, you will be able to move up to the Rapier class. This consists of the same 6 tracks - but tougher!
Single Race
If you choose this option, you will be offered the Team Selection and the Pilot Selection screens followed by the opportunity to select a track.
•
There are six tracks in Wipeout: Altima VII, Karbonis V, Terramax, Korodera, Arridos IV, and Silverstream.
•
You will compete against a field of pilots in a 3 lap race.
Time Trial
As in the Single race, you can choose your team, pilot and track.
•
Remember that all weapons will be deactivated in a time trial.
•
Race against your own best times. You have no one to beat but the clock.
Playing the Game
Championship
If you chose to make an attempt on the championship, you will be taken to the first track in the Venom racing class.
•
If you fail to finish in the top three on a track, you will lose a life. You have three lives per track.
•
Once you have lost them all, your challenge is over.
Single Race
If you chose a single race against a full field of pilots, you will be taken to your selected track.
Time Trial
If you chose to race against the clock and your own best times, you will be taken to your selected track.

John Dekka
Lead pilot for AG Systems. He is 38 years old, American, and one of AG Systems' finest test pilots.
Daniel Chang
Second pilot for AG Systems. He is 29 years old, Chinese, and a defected communist test pilot.
Arial Tetsuo
Lead pilot for Auricom. She is 22 years old, Japanese, and the bitter rival and twin sister of Arian Tetsuo of the Qirex Racing team.
Anastasia Cherovoski
Second pilot for Auricom. Her age and nationality are unconfirmed, but Kel Solaar, Lead Pilot of Qirex Team, knows her secret.
Kel Solaar
Lead pilot for Qirex Industries. He is 40 years old, Russian, and an expert in high-speed flight and all weapons systems with a long-term, mysterious rivalry with Anastasia Cherovoski of the Auricom Team.

Second pilot for Qirex Industries. She is 22 years old, Japanese, and the bitter rival, underdog, and twin sister of Arial Tetsuo of the Auricom racing team.
Sophia de la Rente
Lead pilot for FEISAR. She is 22 years old, French, and the first woman to fly non-stop around the Earth in a single-seater Anti-Gravity fighter.

Second pilot for FEISAR. He is 36 years old, English, and his history is unconfirmed.

Head to Head
The two players will only race against each other in a one on one showdown.
SHIELD
Stops enemy missile weapons having a slowing down effect by absorbing the impact. Each shield is subject to a time limit.
TURBO BOOST
Speeds up the craft very quickly for a short period.
MINES
These slow down the affected craft with each hit. They are released in batches of five hovering for a few seconds before exploding automatically.
SHOCK WAVES
When affected by a Shock Wave a craft starts to shake and is difficult to control for a period of time.
ROCKETS
Fires from the front of the craft and causes an opponent to slow down or impact. Rockets have terrain hugging capacity and fire only in a straight line.
MISSILES
Similar to rockets but with heat seeking capacity.
REVCON
When fired at an opponent this weapon will reverse the controls on the joypad.
