Eiji Shinjo is a Japanese swordsman who wields a katana and serves as the central character of the Battle Arena Toshinden series. He enters the tournament to find his missing older brother, Sho Shinjo. He is a playable fighter in Battle Arena Toshinden, Battle Arena Toshinden 2, and Battle Arena Toshinden 3.
Designed by Tsukasa Kotobuki, Eiji's visual appearance and moveset helped define the aesthetic of the early 3D weapon-based fighting genre. His fighting style relies on a mix of swift sword strikes and elemental energy, featuring signature moves such as the "Rekkuzan" fire projectile and the rising "Ryuseizan" slash. These mechanics established a traditional protagonist archetype within the franchise, often drawing gameplay comparisons to contemporary 2D fighting game leads.
Throughout
Battle Arena Toshinden (1996) and
Battle Arena Toshinden 2 (1996), Eiji's narrative focus centers on his intense rivalry with the British swordsman Kayin Amoh. By
Battle Arena Toshinden 3 (1997), his conflict expands to confront the criminal syndicate Agonist, culminating in a final showdown with his brother. Beyond the mainline fighting titles, the character transitioned into other media during the franchise's peak popularity, starring in the 1996 two-episode anime adaptation and appearing in spin-off titles such as the puzzle game
Puzzle Arena Toshinden and the role-playing game
Toshinden Card Quest.
