About

Jean, known as Tapeta in the Japanese version, is a party member in Breath of Fire II who is the prince of SimaFort. He is cursed to look like a giant frog and can use his unique overworld ability to help the party traverse water and swamp obstacles. His storyline involves reclaiming his birthright and exposing an impostor in his kingdom.
In combat, this character utilizes rapiers and shields, specializing in supportive holy magic and status-altering spells. A key aspect of his progression involves the franchise's signature Shaman fusion system, where combining with the Shamans Seny and Spoo transforms him into a formidable, bipedal holy knight capable of devastating physical attacks.
The character's localization history is highlighted by various iterations of his debut title. While the original console release featured a notoriously rushed translation, the character's dialogue and personality were refined in Breath of Fire II [English Retranslation] (1995) and the community-driven Breath Of Fire II - Retranslated [Homebrew] (1990), which restored nuances from the original Japanese script. Beyond the core RPG entries, the character made a crossover appearance in the puzzle game Cacoma Knight in Bizyland (1993), reflecting early 1990s character-sharing initiatives. Within the broader Breath of Fire franchise, he represents the recurring Crepe clan, establishing a design lineage of amphibian nobility that influenced later non-playable characters and world-building elements in subsequent sequels.
