Moneybags is a recurring non-player character in the Spyro the Dragon franchise, debuting in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!. He acts as a humorous obstacle, demanding large quantities of Gems from Spyro to unlock paths, teach abilities, or release captured allies. In Spyro: Year of the Dragon and Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, he continues his capitalistic schemes until Spyro eventually retrieves his stolen wealth.
Visually designed as an anthropomorphic brown bear wearing a red tuxedo jacket, half-moon spectacles, and an ascot, the character represents a satirical take on corporate greed. Voice actor Milton James provided his original pompous, upper-class English accent. Beyond the mainline platformers, the character made an early promotional appearance on the Crash Team Racing Demo CD (2000), which featured a playable trial of his debut game, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage.
In
Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000), his role expands as he sells custody of playable side-characters like Sheila the Kangaroo and Bentley the Yeti. This game also features his first hostile interaction with the player, culminating in a confrontation in the Midnight Mountain homeworld. By the release of
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (2002) on sixth-generation consoles, his presence persisted as a progress gatekeeper in levels like Luau Island, maintaining his signature monocle and briefcase. The character's legacy remains defined by his role as a frustrating yet comedic foil, embodying the transition of the platforming genre into collect-a-thon mechanics during the late PlayStation era.
