Bungie was established in Chicago, Illinois, and gained early success with Mac-compatible titles like Marathon and Myth. In 2000, the studio was acquired by Microsoft, leading to the development of the critically acclaimed Halo: Combat Evolved as a launch title for the Xbox. Bungie later regained its independence in 2007 and went on to develop the Destiny franchise.
Founded in 1991 by Alex Seropian and Jason Jones, the developer first created titles such as
Gnop! and
Pathways into Darkness. In 2001, the studio's division Bungie West released
Oni, a third-person action game blending martial arts and gunplay. That same year, the release of
Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionized the first-person shooter genre. The game's massive popularity led to various collectible releases, including
Halo: Combat Evolved [Not for Resale] and
Halo: Combat Evolved [Game of the Year].
Following this success, the studio expanded the universe with
Halo 2 in 2004, which pioneered online console matchmaking, followed by
Halo 3,
Halo 3: ODST, and
Halo: Reach. After parting ways with the franchise, custody of the intellectual property transitioned to Microsoft's 343 Industries. In 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired the studio for $3.6 billion, positioning it as an independent subsidiary focused on live-service multiplayer games and multiplatform development.
