Gearbox Software is an American video game developer based in Frisco, Texas. Founded by Randy Pitchford and others, the company initially gained prominence developing expansions for Valve's Half-Life. They went on to create successful original franchises, most notably the tactical shooter series Brothers in Arms and the sci-fi looter-shooter series Borderlands.
Established in 1999, the studio built its early reputation through porting and expansion work, including the PlayStation 2 port of
Half-Life (2001). This technical expertise laid the groundwork for their transition into proprietary intellectual properties. The studio expanded its portfolio with the critically acclaimed World War II tactical shooter
Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30 (2005), which received multiple editions including a
Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30 [Greatest Hits] (2005) release. This success was quickly followed by the sequel
Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood (2000).
In addition to development, the company established a publishing wing to support independent developers and manage its growing catalog, which eventually included
The Borderlands Collection [Classics] (2005). Over the decades, the studio underwent significant corporate transitions, including acquisition by Embracer Group in 2021 and a subsequent acquisition by Take-Two Interactive in 2024. These acquisitions secured the studio's position within the global gaming industry while allowing it to maintain its core development pipelines.
