Grasshopper Manufacture is the developer behind cult classic titles such as Silver Jiken (The Silver Case), Michigan: Report from Hell, and the surreal action-adventure game Killer7. The studio is also highly recognized for creating the No More Heroes franchise, co-developing entries in the Fatal Frame series, and developing the shoot 'em up Sine Mora.
Founded in 1998 by game designer Goichi Suda, the studio established its distinct artistic identity with its debut title,
The Silver Case (originally released in Japan as
Silver Jiken in 1999). This visual novel introduced the "Film Window" system, setting a precedent for the developer's unconventional narrative structures. The studio continued to experiment with genre boundaries in
Michigan: Report from Hell (2004), a survival horror game played entirely from the perspective of a news camera operator.
International prominence arrived with the 2005 release of
Killer7, a rail-shooter and adventure hybrid that garnered a cult following for its striking cel-shaded graphics and complex psychological plot. This success paved the way for the
No More Heroes franchise, which debuted in 2007 and utilized motion controls to deliver stylized hack-and-slash combat. The studio expanded its collaborative portfolio by co-developing
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (2008) and partnering with Digital Reality for the side-scrolling shoot 'em up
Sine Mora (later re-released as
Sine Mora EX). Following acquisitions by GungHo Online Entertainment in 2013 and NetEase Games in 2021, the developer continues to produce highly stylized, auteur-driven interactive experiences.
