Krome Studios is an independent game development studio based in Brisbane, Australia. The company is most famous for creating the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger mascot platformer franchise, and has also developed various licensed titles for major publishers, including games in the Spyro the Dragon and Star Wars franchises.
Founded in 1999 by Robert Walsh, Steve Stamatiadis, and John Passfield, the developer emerged from the remnants of Housemarque Australia. The studio quickly established itself by producing sports titles such as
Championship Surfer and
Sunny Garcia Surfing.
As the studio expanded, it secured high-profile contracts for licensed properties. This led to the creation of character-driven action games, including
Jimmy Neutron Jet Fusion,
King Arthur, and
Legend of Spyro The Eternal Night. Alongside these licensed projects, the developer focused heavily on its proprietary intellectual property, releasing
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger,
Ty The Tasmanian Tiger [Promo Not For Resale], and the sequel
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2 Bush Rescue.
At its peak in the mid-2000s, the company operated offices in multiple cities and employed hundreds of staff, making it one of the largest game development houses in the southern hemisphere. Although industry shifts led to significant downsizing in 2010, the studio survived by transitioning to smaller-scale projects, porting services, and remastering its classic library for modern digital storefronts.
