About

Mirage Technologies (Multimedia) Ltd. developed the highly publicized 1994 fighting game Rise of the Robots, which featured pre-rendered 3D graphics. They followed this up with its 1996 sequel, Rise 2: Resurrection, and the 1997 isometric shoot 'em up Bedlam. The studio was primarily recognized for its focus on advanced CGI visuals during the early era of 3D gaming.
Initially operating as a British development studio, the company leveraged cutting-edge Silicon Graphics workstations to produce the distinctive pre-rendered sprites for Rise of the Robots. To bolster the game's high-profile marketing campaign, the studio secured a soundtrack contribution from Queen guitarist Brian May. Despite widespread multi-platform ports across systems like the Amiga, Sega Mega Drive, and Super Nintendo, the title faced severe critical backlash for its simplistic gameplay and restrictive control scheme.
To address these mechanical shortcomings, the developer overhauled their engine for Rise 2: Resurrection, expanding the roster to eighteen characters and introducing execution-style "Anarchy" finishing moves. Published by Acclaim Entertainment, the sequel targeted the newer 32-bit PlayStation and Sega Saturn consoles but failed to redeem the franchise's reputation. The studio's final major release, Bedlam, transitioned away from fighting games into a sci-fi mercenary theme, utilizing a custom engine that allowed for real-time terrain deformation. Following these releases, the studio quietly dissolved as the industry transitioned fully from pre-rendered sprites to real-time 3D polygon rendering.
