About

Nihon Bussan Co. Ltd. developed and published notable retro titles including the action game Crazy Climber and the scrolling shooters MagMax, Seicross, and Terra Cresta. During the late 1980s, they also expanded their Famicom library with titles such as the action-platformer Booby Kids and the role-playing game Artelius.
Operating under the brand name Nichibutsu, the Osaka-based developer established a reputation for mechanical innovation across arcades and home consoles. The dual-joystick control scheme of Crazy Climber (1982) challenged players to scale skyscrapers while dodging obstacles, a concept that saw continued success with its 1986 Famicom adaptation. In the shoot 'em up genre, the company introduced distinct tactical elements. Seicross (1986) combined high-speed riding with collision-based combat and rescue mechanics. MagMax (1986) utilized a unique multi-layered scrolling system allowing players to assemble a giant mech from modular parts found throughout the stages. This modular design philosophy peaked with Terra Cresta (1986), where players managed a five-part ship formation to unleash devastating attacks. By 1987, the studio transitioned these experimental designs to the Famicom. Booby Kids (1987) offered maze-routing action based on digging traps, while Artelius (1987) pushed hardware limits by merging space-flight simulation with traditional role-playing progression. These titles defined the developer's golden era of creative, system-driven game design.
