Novotrade Software Kft. was a prominent Hungarian development studio that created iconic retro titles. The developer is highly regarded for creating the Ecco the Dolphin series, including the original game and its sequel Ecco: The Tides of Time. They also contributed to the Impossible Mission franchise, developing games like Impossible Mission II.
Operating as one of the earliest commercial software exporters in Eastern Europe, the studio established its reputation by programming for Western home computers. Early projects included the shooter
IO (1982) and the cycling simulation
Tour De France (1985). The company became closely associated with Epyx's action-adventure series, contributing to the porting and development of the original
Impossible Mission (1984). This relationship expanded with the creation of
Impossible Mission II (1990), alongside platform-specific iterations such as
Impossible Mission II [SEI] (1990) and
Impossible Mission II [AVE] (1990).
The developer's technical expertise on 16-bit consoles led to a major partnership with Sega, resulting in the underwater adventure
Ecco the Dolphin (1991) and its science-fiction sequel
ECCO: The Tides of Time (1991). These titles showcased advanced aquatic physics and atmospheric audio design. Beyond these core intellectual properties, the studio also developed titles within the
Tiny Toon Adventures franchise, solidifying its role as a versatile developer capable of handling major international licenses during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.
