Studio Saizensen Ltd. is a Japanese game development studio best known for creating the side-scrolling hack-and-slash game Code of Princess and its updated release Code of Princess EX. They also developed the crossover fighting game Blade Strangers and co-developed the PlayStation Portable role-playing game Shining Hearts with Sega.
Founded by Toshinobu Kondo, the studio established a reputation for distinct 2D hand-drawn sprite animation and cooperative gameplay mechanics. The fantasy action-RPG franchise began gaining traction with early iterations and promotional releases, including
Code of Princess (2000) and the
Code of Princess [Soundtrack Bundle] (2009), before the major cooperative action title
Code of Princess (2012) debuted on the Nintendo 3DS. This release featured character designs by Kinu Nishimura and combined beat-'em-up elements with role-playing progression.
In the handheld RPG market, the developer collaborated with Sega on
Shining Hearts (2010) for the PlayStation Portable, which later received a budget re-release as
Shining Hearts [PSP the Best] (2012). The studio's signature characters later crossed over into
Blade Strangers (2018), a fighting game featuring roster members from various indie properties. The
Code of Princess intellectual property was subsequently modernized for high-definition platforms with
Code of Princess EX (2018) and its physical
Code of Princess EX [Launch Edition] (2018), which introduced rebalanced gameplay, local cooperative play, and HD visuals to Nintendo Switch and PC audiences.
