About
In the Crash Bandicoot series, including Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and Crash Twinsanity, the TNT Crate is a red crate marked with 'TNT'. Jumping on the crate triggers a three-second fuse before it explodes, damaging nearby enemies or the player, while spinning into it causes an immediate explosion. It also appears as an obstacle and usable weapon in the racing spin-off Crash Nitro Kart.
During the sixth generation of video game consoles, this explosive hazard remained a staple of level design, transitioning from the original PlayStation era into multiplatform releases. In Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex (2001) and its subsequent 2002 ports, developers utilized the object to create environmental puzzles, requiring players to navigate tight spaces or trigger chain reactions to clear pathways and collect hidden gems. The item's inclusion in the Crash Twinsanity & Spyro A Hero's Tale [2 Playable Demos] promotional release in 2000 showcased these evolving mechanics to audiences early on.
In the racing spin-off Crash Nitro Kart (2003), the object transitioned into a tactical hazard, requiring precise driving to avoid or strategic placement to disrupt opponents. By the release of Crash Twinsanity (2004), the item's utility expanded further through the game's cooperative mechanics, where players could throw or slide the explosive boxes into enemies and obstacles. Across these diverse titles, the object served as a fundamental tool for developers to balance risk and reward, forcing players to exercise caution during high-speed platforming and racing sequences.
