Originally founded as a public domain software library for the Commodore Amiga, 17-Bit Software played a major role in the UK Amiga scene. In 1990, it merged with the developer Team 7 to form the prominent video game developer and publisher Team17. The entity is distinct from the modern indie studio 17-BIT.
The company established itself as a key distributor and publisher of commercial software, bringing prominent arcade and console translations to home computer platforms. Through licensing agreements and distribution networks, the publisher handled major releases, particularly targeting the Commodore Amiga and other microcomputers of the era.
Among its notable catalog of distributed and published titles were home conversions of acclaimed arcade hits. This included the challenging platformers
Makaimura (1986),
Ghosts 'n Goblins (1989), and its sequel
Ghouls'n Ghosts (1989), alongside the maritime action-adventure
Makaijima: Higemaru (1987). The company also facilitated the European computer releases of the popular platforming title
Duck Tales (1990) and its subsequent editions in 1991. By securing the rights to these high-profile Japanese arcade and console properties, the publisher provided European computer gamers with faithful ports of major international franchises, cementing its influence on the domestic software market before transitioning its core operations.
