GameTek was established in 1987 and initially specialized in publishing video game adaptations of television game shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!. The company published titles across various platforms, including the NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and PC, before filing for bankruptcy in 1997.
The company's early portfolio heavily featured adaptations of popular American television properties. In 1988, the publisher released
Wheel of Fortune,
Jeopardy, and
Classic Concentration. The following year, the lineup expanded with youth-oriented versions and alternative game show properties, including
Jeopardy Jr,
Wheel of Fortune Junior Edition,
Hollywood Squares [Black Box], and
Hollywood Squares. To appeal to international markets, the company also published
Glucksrad in 1990, a German-language adaptation of the
Wheel of Fortune format.
Beyond these initial releases, the publisher secured licensing agreements with major television networks and production companies, such as King World and Merv Griffin Enterprises. While initially relying on external developers like Sharedata and Softie to program their titles, the company eventually expanded its operations to include original intellectual properties and sports titles. This diversification included publishing simulation games, strategy titles, and porting arcade games to home systems, establishing a broader presence in the retail software market during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
