GameTek was established in 1987 and became prominent by licensing and publishing video game adaptations of popular TV game shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, and Hollywood Squares. Beyond game shows, the company also published ports of other notable titles, such as the NES version of Elite. GameTek filed for bankruptcy in 1997, leading to the liquidation of its assets.
Originally founded as a subsidiary of IJE Inc. and headquartered in Florida, the publisher built its early portfolio through partnerships with external development studios such as Sharedata and Softie. In 1988, the company distributed a wave of major releases, including
Hollywood Squares (1988),
Jeopardy (1988),
Wheel of Fortune (1988),
Classic Concentration (1988), and the influential space simulation port
Elite (1988).
The company sustained this output with subsequent editions, including
Hollywood Squares (1989) and
Hollywood Squares [Black Box] (1989). It also branched into youth-oriented television properties with the release of
Double Dare (1990). GameTek launched an initial public offering in 1993 to fund an expansion into internal game development and international distribution, establishing a European division. Despite these growth efforts, high development costs and shifting market dynamics in the 32-bit console era eventually led to the company's closure.
