The Capcom Generation series consists of five individual compilations released in 1998, each focusing on a specific franchise or genre from Capcom's arcade history. Capcom Generation 1 features the 1942 shoot 'em up series, Capcom Generation 2 compiles the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise, and Capcom Generation 3, 4, and 5 collect early arcade classics and various editions of Street Fighter II.
Released primarily for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn in Japan, these compilations provided arcade-perfect conversions of Capcom's seminal titles.
Capcom Generation 1 preserved the vertical shoot 'em ups
1942,
1943: The Battle of Midway, and
1943 Kai.
Capcom Generation 2 brought the notoriously difficult platformers
Ghosts 'n Goblins,
Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and the console-exclusive
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts to 32-bit hardware.
Capcom Generation 3 highlighted Capcom's earliest origins with
Vulgus,
Sonson,
Pirate Ship Higemaru, and
Exed Exes.
Capcom Generation 4 focused on run-and-gun gameplay with
Commando,
Gun.Smoke, and
Mercs. Finally,
Capcom Generation 5 delivered the definitive home versions of
Street Fighter II,
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, and
Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting.
Each disc featured extensive bonus content, including database entries, arranged soundtracks, and unlockable artwork. While individual volumes remained Japanese exclusives, the first four entries were compiled and released in Europe as a budget-priced box set. This preservation effort served as the direct precursor to the broader
Capcom Classics Collection series released during the sixth console generation.
