The Command & Conquer series is a landmark real-time strategy franchise that includes the original Command & Conquer (1995/1996) and its sci-fi sequel Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. The franchise expanded with the alternate-history spin-off Command & Conquer: Red Alert and the first-person shooter Command & Conquer: Renegade. These titles established key RTS mechanics such as base building, resource harvesting, and live-action full-motion video cutscenes.
Developed initially by Westwood Studios, the franchise's rapid expansion in the late 1990s led to numerous platform ports and specialized editions. Following the success of the initial MS-DOS release, the series transitioned to home consoles with
Command & Conquer (1996) for the Sega Saturn and
Command & Conquer (1997) for the PlayStation, introducing real-time strategy to console audiences.
The franchise's commercial success prompted various re-releases and strategy guides, including
Command & Conquer: Red Alert [EA Classics] (1997) and the collector-oriented
Command & Conquer [Platinum] (1998). Nintendo 64 players received a specialized 3D-rendered port with
Command & Conquer (1999).
