Hogwarts Legacy is an action role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software and published under the Portkey Games label. Released in 2023 in standard, Deluxe, and Collector's Editions, the game is set in the late 1800s Wizarding World. Players experience life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry while investigating an ancient magic.
Development of the title began several years prior to its reveal, aiming to provide an immersive open-world experience outside the direct timeline of the original novels. Players navigate the environment using broomsticks or magical beasts, engaging in real-time combat that utilizes a combo-based spell system. The narrative centers on a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok and an alliance with the dark wizard Victor Rookwood, offering a distinct lore expansion for the franchise.
The launch of Hogwarts Legacy was distributed across multiple console generations, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. To cater to different segments of the fanbase, the release was tiered. Hogwarts Legacy [Deluxe Edition] provided players with early gameplay access and exclusive in-game cosmetics, such as the Dark Arts pack. Meanwhile, Hogwarts Legacy [Collector's Edition] targeted dedicated collectors by bundling the game with physical items, notably a book-supported floating wand and a steel case. The title achieved immense commercial success, surpassing 22 million copies sold by the end of its launch year and establishing itself as one of the highest-grossing interactive releases of the decade.
