The MTV Music Generator series allowed players to create, edit, and remix music tracks using a variety of pre-made samples and built-in tools. The franchise debuted with MTV Music Generator in 1999, followed by MTV Music Generator 2 in 2001 and MTV Music Generator 3: This Is the Remix in 2004. These titles were released across platforms such as the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and Xbox.
Developed by Jester Interactive and published by Codemasters, the franchise originated from the European
Music software series before securing the MTV brand for North American distribution. The debut title,
MTV Music Generator (1999), distinguished itself by including a robust video editor that allowed users to generate and synchronize 3D visualizers alongside their audio compositions.
The sequel,
MTV Music Generator 2 (2001), leveraged upgraded hardware to offer multi-channel audio playback and support for USB keyboards, simplifying the sequencing process. This release saw distribution variants, including a
Platinum edition and a highly limited
Promo Only version.
With
MTV Music Generator 3 (2004), also released in a
Platinum edition, the series transitioned toward mainstream hip-hop and electronic music. This iteration featured licensed master tracks from prominent artists such as OutKast, Snoop Dogg, and Carl Cox, shifting the gameplay focus toward remixing established hits rather than building tracks entirely from scratch. The series is remembered for democratizing music production tools on home consoles prior to the widespread accessibility of computer-based digital audio workstations.
