About

The Record of Agarest War series is a franchise of tactical RPGs featuring a unique Soul Breed system where players choose a heroine to father the next generation's protagonist. The series includes the original Record of Agarest War (also known as Agarest: Generations of War), its updated version Record of Agarest War: Re-appearance, and the sequel Record of Agarest War 2. These titles combine grid-based tactical combat with visual novel elements and dating simulation mechanics.

Developed collaboratively by Compile Heart, Red Entertainment, and Idea Factory, the franchise gained international traction through localized releases. Ghostlight published the PAL version, Agarest Generations of War, in 2009, while Aksys Games brought Record of Agarest War to North America in 2010. This North American debut included the Record of Agarest War [Limited Edition], which drew media attention for its suggestive physical collectibles. Prior to these Western localizations, the Japanese market received an updated Xbox 360 port titled Record of Agarest War: Re-appearance in 2008.

The franchise expanded with the release of Record of Agarest War 2 in Japan in 2010, which overhauled the combat mechanics to feature a more active, real-time-oriented battle system. This sequel was later localized for Western audiences in 2012 as Record of Agarest War 2 in North America and Agarest: Generations of War 2 in Europe. To sustain the franchise's domestic presence, Compile Heart also issued budget-priced re-releases in Japan, such as the Record of Agarest War 2 [CH Selection] in 2012. Across these iterations, the series established a niche following for its extensive multi-generational campaigns and collaborative development pedigree.
