The Sakura Taisen series, also known as Sakura Wars, combines tactical role-playing battles with visual novel and dating simulation elements. The franchise began with the 1996 release of Sakura Taisen on the Sega Saturn, which received several special editions, and was followed by the spin-off Sakura Wars: Steam Radio Show in 1997 and the sequel Sakura Taisen 2 in 1998. These early titles established the series' signature steampunk setting in a fictionalized Taisho-era Japan.
Created by Oji Hiroi and developed by Sega and Red Company, the franchise's success was driven by its memorable cast, character designs by Kosuke Fujishima, and a dramatic orchestral score by Kohei Tanaka. To support the initial launch of
Sakura Taisen (1996), Sega released specialized retail packages, including
Sakura Taisen [Sega Saturn Collection] (1996),
Sakura Taisen [Limited Edition A Type] (1996), and the
Sakura Taisen [Mouse Bundle] (1996), which bundled the software with a compatible peripheral.
Following the interactive fan disc
Sakura Wars: Steam Radio Show (1997) and the successful sequel
Sakura Taisen 2 (1998), Sega ported the original adventure to the Dreamcast console. This transition resulted in the releases of
Sakura Taisen (2000) and
Sakura Taisen [Limited Edition] (2000), which updated the visuals and features for newer hardware. The popularity of these specific releases helped spawn a massive media mix franchise in Japan, encompassing live-action stage musicals, animated television series, and extensive merchandise, establishing the Imperial Combat Revue as a major cultural phenomenon of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
