Tales of the World is a prominent spin-off sub-series within the Tales role-playing franchise. It includes titles such as Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2, Tales of the World: Summoner's Lineage, and the Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology trilogy. These games typically feature crossover interactions between characters from different mainline Tales games, utilizing dungeon-crawling or tactical RPG gameplay.
Bandai Namco developed these spin-offs primarily for handheld consoles, beginning on the Game Boy Advance with
Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2 (2002), which introduced a costume-based job system. This was followed by the tactical role-playing game
Tales of the World: Summoner's Lineage (2003), acting as a gameplay sequel to
Tales of Phantasia. The Game Boy Advance era concluded with
Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3 (2005), which incorporated turn-based tactical battles.
The sub-series transitioned to the PlayStation Portable with
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (2006) and its subsequent Western localization
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (2007), introducing 3D graphics and customizable player avatars. This entry established a trilogy completed by
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 (2009) and
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3 (2011). These PlayStation Portable releases expanded the character roster significantly, drawing from mainline entries like
Tales of Symphonia and
Tales of Vesperia. While the earlier Game Boy Advance titles remained exclusive to Japan, the 2007 release of
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology served as the primary exposure of this crossover sub-series to North American and European audiences.
