RobotWar is a programming strategy game in which players design and code combat robots to battle autonomously in a futuristic arena. Set in the year 2002, where human warfare has been deemed too dangerous, nations settle disputes through robot combat. Using a built-in programming language, players create robots capable of moving, scanning, and attacking without direct human control during matches. Battles take place in an arena where robots must locate opponents using radar pulses, as they have no direct knowledge of enemy positions or movement. Success depends on clever programming, tactical decision-making, and the ability to predict an opponent's actions. Multiple robots can compete simultaneously, with the last surviving machine declared the winner. Originally created by Silas Warner on the PLATO system in the 1970s, RobotWar was later adapted for the Apple II and published by Muse Software in 1981, becoming one of the earliest and most influential programming games.
