Winter Heat is the sequel to DecAthlete (also known as Athlete Kings), replacing decathlon with winter sports. The competition (in Arcade, Saturn or Practice modes) includes 11 events featuring eight athletes of different nationalities - Li Huang, Karl Vain, Joe Kudou, Ellen Reggiani, Aleksei Rigel and Rick Blade are joined by B.B. (replacing Jef Jansens, who appears as a secret athlete) and Johann Stensen (instead of Femi Kadiena).
The game is a typical winter sports game, in the line of those released by Epyx but with a more arcade feel. The events include:
Speed Skiing: A simple dashing event where the goal is to descend the hill as fast as possible (in speeds over 200 km/h). Action is reduced to mash the button to gain speed.
Ski Jumping: Composed by four parts: The run up (mash the button to gain speed), the jump (selecting the angle), the flight (mash the button to gain extra length) and the landing (pressing the action button too early will lose valuable meters, too late will cost the jump).
Downhill: A simplified version of the real downhill event. It's impossible to miss the gates, and the challenge is to get a strong start-up, keep a straight path not losing speed hitting the fences and hitting the action button to jump hills perfectly.
Short Track Speed Skating: A straightforward event where the directional pad controls the direction of the athlete along the speed button to control the pace. As the event runs for over 40 seconds, it's possible to hold second position, making the opponent cut air resistance which allows the player to reach fastest speeds with less button presses.
Skeleton: The first event in the ice tunnels, it requires a fast run-up followed by a strong entrance in the tunnels. By pressing the action button it's possible to slow down the sled and make more controlled turns, or the athlete can fall from it, which not only loses time but also requires a small run-up.
Slalom: Just like the Downhill, it's impossible to miss a gate in the Slalom. After an initial sprint the player has to press the action button to approach each flag in the best way possible. Hitting the button too early or too late will make the athlete hit the flag, losing valuable time.
Aerial: An event similar to the Ski Jump. Instead of offering a "click-along" version, the player starts by setting the difficulty of the jump, and then three parts follow: in the run-up, the player sets the speed by mashing the speed button, followed by the jump which sets the strength (by pressing the action button) and when the athlete leaves the launch ramp, the player must mash the speed button once again to complete the jump. To complete a jump, the player must fill each section of the jump bar by making enough button presses
Bobsleigh: In all similar to the Skeleton, except there's no option to slow down.
Speed Skating: Another simple button-mashing event but with a twist: speed must be controlled on the turns, or the athlete will slip out losing a few seconds in the process. The speed can be controlled by a color graph above the power bar.
Snowboard: A mix between the Slalom and Downhill. There are several gates to be passed, plus two jumps. Unlike the other two events, it's possible to miss a gate, which carries a one second penalty for each missed.
Cross Country: The stamina-influenced event. There's a long track with some hills that can be taken for advantage, as during downhill slopes it's possible to gain a lot of speed without losing stamina.

The ultimate goal is to defeat ten other top competitors and secure the gold in this intense winter sports tournament.

Now things are really heating up! Eleven of the world's top super-athletes are going for the gold in a silvery world of ice and snow.

How to Play
Starting Up
Set up your Sega Saturn system as described in its instruction manual. Plug in Control Pad 1. For two-player games, plug in Control Pad 2. For more than two players, use the Sega 6 Player™ Multiplayer Adapter (sold separately).
Note: Winter Heat™ is for one to four players.
Place the Winter Heat disc, label side up, in the well of the CD tray and close the lid.
Turn on the TV or monitor and the Sega Saturn. The Sega Saturn logo appears on screen. If nothing appears, turn the system off and make sure it is set up correctly before turning it on again.
If you wish to stop a game in progress and return to the on-screen Control panel, simultaneously press Buttons A, B, C and Start on the Sega Saturn Control Pad. When the game Title screen appears press again to go to the on-screen Control panel.
Important: Your Sega Saturn CD contains a security code that allows the disc to be read. Be sure to keep the disc clean and handle it carefully. If your Sega Saturn system has trouble reading the disc, remove the disc and wipe it carefully, starting from the center of the disc and wiping straight out toward the edge.
Options Menu
In this screen, each player's current Control Pad button settings are shown parallel to the button labels on a central column. Press the D-Pad up or down to highlight a button setting and press left or right to change the function of that button (ACTION, SPEED or no function).
Highlight and select (by pressing Button A or C) DEFAULT to reset your Control Pad settings to the default settings. Select EXIT to return to the Option Menu.

To change a feature, press the D-Pad up or down to highlight it, and left or right to change the setting.
•
HOW TO PLAY (ON/OFF): If ON is selected, an explanation of how to use the Control Pad for each event is displayed before event starts.
•
NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS (1 - 3): Some events allow you more than one attempt to qualify. Adjust this number here.
•
DIFFICULTY (EASY, NORMAL, HARD, HARDEST): The more difficult the game, the more challenging it becomes to qualify in Arcade events.
•
AUDIO (STEREO/MONO): Choose between stereo and mono sound output.
Select DEFAULT SETTINGS to restore the default settings for the above items. When you have finished making adjustments, press Start or highlight EXIT and press Button A or C.
Game Modes
•
11 Event Heat: After the Character Select screen and World Record display screen, the first of the eleven events begins. In this mode you compete in all the events. It is your responsibility as a decent hard working citizen to get as many points as possible.
•
Arcade Mode: Compete in the eight original arcade events over two days. In this mode, you need to do well enough in each event to qualify for the next. If you flake out and don't make the qualifying event limit, the Continue screen appears. Press Start before the timer reaches zero to go for the gold again. The Arcade Mode Game Select screen appears when you choose to continue.

Individual Match: As with the other modes, the Character Select screen appears first. Select the event you want to practice from the Game Select screen. Press the D-Pad left or right to highlight the event, and press Button A or C to select. The Game Select screen appears each time you finish an event.
•
Custom Heat: Select your own favorite events to be included in this special competition. Press the D-Pad up or down to highlight an event you want to include, then press A or C to confirm. Select up to eight events, then select the green START lamp to begin the heat.

Press the D-Pad left or right to highlight a character, and select by pressing Button A or C.
Name Entry
For outstanding performances, you are invited to enter your initials in the record books. You are asked to do so when:

Your overall score for all of the events in the 11 Event Heat mode or Arcade mode is in the top five.
•
Your score for one of the events in 11 Event Heat mode or Arcade mode is in the top five.
Press the D-Pad left or right to highlight a character, and press Button A or C to select. Highlight the arrow and press a Confirm Button to delete a character. When finished, highlight END and press Button A or C.
Note: The Name Entry screen appears only the first time you score in the top five. Your initials are added to the record books automatically should you score in the top five again.
Hall of Fame
View the highest 5 scores in each event or mode. For a particular mode's high scores, highlight one of the scores and press Button A or C to see a rundown of the performances for each event.

Press B to Return to Option Menu.

Aerial
Once 'GO' appears, watch the Skill Level Indicator and press an ACTION Button to set the desired jump skill level. The player must then match this level by rapidly pressing a SPEED Button for speed, holding an ACTION Button for power during the jump, and pressing a SPEED Button for aerial maneuver skill while in the air. The jump is successful if the final total Speed/Power/Skill level matches or exceeds the required amount.

Joe is a newcomer to the international arena, but he has quickly given the competition something to worry about. Thanks to strict mental and physical training back home in his native Hokkaido, Joe is proving that he too is ready to become a superstar.

The mountains are his home and he wants everyone to know who's master around here.
Aleksei Rigel
This is Rick Blade's arch rival. Thanks to a high technology training regimen in his native Russia, he is probably the most finely tuned of all the competitors, but his experience in international competition is limited.
